Vineyard:
An 18-year-old Shiraz vineyard on a slight southern slope on very high-potential red Karoo soil with layers of clay and lime. Rootstock Richter 110, clone SH1A.
Climate:
A warm and dry season, with cool nights. The grapes achieved ripeness quite easily with slightly higher alcohol levels and lower acidities. Overall, the dry weather ensured healthy grapes and wines with pronounced fruit and easy drinkability.
Harvest:
Machine harvested from 2am to 11am into 4-ton bins, after we did grape selection in the vineyard. Production of 10,000 litres per hectare.
Winemaking:
Grapes were harvested at 20.5 B. Skin contact was given in the drainers for 2 hours to extract colour before only the free-run juice was drained from the skins and settled before fermentation. The wine was fermented at 13°C with Vin 13 yeast. After fermentation, the wine was racked, blended, filtered, and bottled.
Tasting Notes:
Vibrant, salmon-coloured wine with prominent red berry flavours on the nose. A velvet palate showing subtle hints of cherries, ending with a lingering finish. Beautiful balance between the fruit and acidity in the taste. Dry and elegant. Ideal with salads and seafood.
